Half length, wearing a brocaded red and cream tunic, ruff collar, holding a plumed hat under his left arm, oil on panel
51.5 x 41.5cm.

* The sitter was the eldest son and heir apparent of King James I and VI. Widely seen as a capable and charismatic heir, the Prince died of typhoid fever aged just 18. His brother Charles (1600-1649) became Prince of Wales in 1616 and succeeded to the throne in 1625.

Provenance: Collection of Lord Thurso, Caithness; Ballater, McEwan Gallery, 1993, by whom sold to the vendor.

Condition

Braced verso along vertical split on right side of panel; retouching in background, over old flaked losses (some more recent flaked losses apparent in background); retouching elsewhere; some small areas of abrasion.
