* The traditional identification of the sitter as George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle (1608-1670) is not obviously plausible as the similarity to known depictions of Monck is slight.
Provenance: Collection of the late Prince Herman of Saxe Weimar Eisenach, Count von Ostheim (1886-1964); thence by descent until sold in these rooms on October 20th 2006, lot 1525; Private Collection.
Condition
Replaced stretchers; lined; associated retouching; paint losses; some frosted varnish; needs a clean.
