* The portrait in the centre is Walter Warren (1869–1942), engraver for Purdey and Sons, Gunmakers, a close neighbour of the Spare family in Kennington, and the author of 'The Youth and the Sage' (1927), which Spare illustrated with a frontispiece.

Provenance: London, Christie's South Kensington, May 12th 1994, lot 90.
