Description

Portrait of the Hon. Hamilton Douglas Halyburton, 2nd son of the 15th Earl of Morton, quarter length, wearing a blue tunic, grey waistcoat and white jabot, extensively inscribed by the sitters brother on an old label verso. Pastel watercolour and gouache, oval 25cm x 21.5cm. Overall size 38cm x 34.5cm.

*He was born on 10 October 1763 to Sholto Douglas, 15th Earl of Morton. He died on 31st December 1783 when he was in command of the barge of HMS Assistance. He was using it to chase deserters off of Sandy Hook. He and his crew were caught in a winter storm and they all died.

Condition

There is some Chinese white missing from the jabot with a small scratch to his grey waistcoat, otherwise in good order throughout.

The two day auction featuring includes fine art, furniture, decorative arts, jewellery, silver, clocks and watches.

Highlights include a gentleman's 18ct gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date and an automatic 18ct gold Tourbillon by Audemars Piguet in the watch section, alongside a Swiss gold musical snuff box. The jewellery section offers Art Deco, Victorian and Edwardian pieces, including a diamond and black enamel ladybird brooch by Cartier and an Art Deco diamond bracelet.

The fine art and furniture highlights include an early 18th century Irish mahogany bureau bookcase from Creech Grange and a pair of 19th century marble urns on plinths. Amongst the portraits on offer is one by Arthur Ambrose McEvoy and the other paintings include a coastal scene by William Joy. Collectors will also find items like a handpainted 1933 album of Chinese shop signs and a Queen Anne gilt gesso looking glass.
